Almanacs

Almanacs offer researchers a complementary perspective to the medium of newspapers. While newspapers above all served the inhabitants of urban areas, almanacs were more read by parts of the population which did not often read newspapers or lived in rural areas. In addition to their chronological and literary sections, these calendars featured for example lists of tradesmen and businesses as well as officials, officers, clergy and teachers, and also train schedules, announcements of annual fairs, indexes of regional companies, organisations, schools and homeowners. There was also often space for personal notes. Almanacs are thus suitable for researching the lifestyle and reading habits of rural populations.

In order to make this source material accessible in an appealing form the following 26 almanacs have been digitized as part of the projects ‟German-Language Periodicals” and ‟Digital Consolidation of Collections”:

As part of the project ‟Jewish German-Language Periodicals”, five historical almanacs are currently being digitized:

  • Almanahul evreiesc. Zsidó évkönyv. Jüdisches Jahrbuch [Almanahul evreiesc. Zsidó évkönyv. Jewish Yearbook] (Timişoara, 1935, 1936)
  • Israelitischer Kalender. Nebst Tempelgebräuchen, Kadisch und Maskir-Gebet, Perlen vom Talmud [Israelite Almanac. With Temple Customs, Kaddish and Maskir Prayer, Pearls of the Talmud] (Timişoara, 1926–1930)
  • Jüdischer Almanach [Jewish Almanac] (Prague, 1924/25, 1926/1927, 1928/29, 1933/34, 1934/35)
  • Jüdischer Almanach für Gross-Rumänien [Jewish Almanac for Greater Romania] (Chernivtsi, 1922/23)
