Birgit Schwarz studied English Literature, German Medieval Literature and Cultural Studies at the LMU Munich, earning her M.A. in 2002. This was followed up with a course in Literary Translation (English to German), also at the LMU. She has been working for the former Osteuropa-Institut Munich (now IOS Regensburg) since 1997, first as a student research assistant, later as a research assistant.

She acts as assistant to the managing editor, Richard Frensch, and English language editor for the journal Economic Systems.
